Junior Sailing

Sailing is a rewarding skill that can take a few weeks to learn and a lifetime to master.

Unlike most sports, sailing is a sport that can be enjoyed for your entire life. Along with that  it teaches us important life skills as well as helping us maintain good physical and mental health.

KBSC offers a number of ways to get started in sailing.

Informal Junior Training
KBSC runs informal training for members every Saturday morning during the sailing season (approx October to April/May).

Non-members can come down to see what it is all about and have a go but it is expected that junior sailors do become members to continue with the program.

Sail training starts on the beach in front of the dinghy shed (to the west end of Koombana Bay Sailing Club) by rigging the boats and learning some simple wind awareness and basic sailing techniques.
It's then onto the waters of Koombana Bay in a dinghy. Juniors will go with an experienced sailor to start and then move into a single-handed boat when they are feeling confident.

This training is mainly aimed at children aged 8 and up however we try to cater for all ages and levels, the aim is to learn while having fun.

Once the basics have been mastered ongoing coaching is available to learn advanced techniques and an introduction to racing.

To register for our informal training sessions;

STEP 1 -

Sign up as a Junior KBSC Member or register as a temporary member (maximum 6 session, $10 each) on SailPass.

STEP 2 -

You MUST register before each event so that we know who is attending. Registration is available online at RevSport.
(You must be a Junior KBSC Member to participate in the Intermediate Training sessions).

After you have used your 6 temporary memberships there is the requirement to join as a full KBSC sailing member. (Fees already paid come off the membership fee total)

Once you are a full member of KBSC you are no longer required to register for each session but you still need to tell us if you are attending each week or not.

Formal Training
KBSC run formal courses for both juniors and adults between December and April.
Junior courses are best suited to children aged 8 and above.

Children learn much faster with formal training because the day after day repetition commits manoeuvres to motor memory allowing the child to focus on where they want to.

Courses are generally 12 hours long and are split into 4 or 5 days.

All equipment and safety gear is provided.
Numbers are limited and pre-payment is essential, members discounts may apply.

The newsletter also has regular updates on upcoming courses.
Subscribe to the newsletter to keep up to date with club information.
