Keelboat Courses

Keelboats allow you to learn to sail without the fear of capsizing, and usually with several other people on the boat. Courses run at KBSC will be on an S80 yacht (8 metre Swarbrick design keelboat)
Learning to sail in self-righting keelboats provides a learning platform that is stable yet responsive.

As your skills progress, you will also develop an understanding of each persons role and how teamwork plays a major part of being an effective crew.

Areas Covered in Start Crewing/Start Helming

Basic sailing terminology and rules, basic knots, tacking and gybing, man overboard recovery, preparation of the boat, helm and trim on all points of sail, recovery of man overboard whilst at the helm.

You will get to experience and control all positions on the boat including helming and should come away with the knowledge and confidence to sail a small boat competently. For those that wish, you can then confidently progress to larger boats or participate as crew on a racing boat.

Juniors/Teens/Adults - Start Sailing Dinghies 1 & 2

Your sailing journey starts here as you learn the fundamental skills of sailing and are introduced to the fun of dinghy sailing in a safe and supportive environment.
We learn much faster with formal training because the day after day repetition commits manoeuvres to motor memory allowing us to focus on other areas of importance.
As you master the fundamental sailing skills, you will become equipped to sail your dinghy on your own.

This course is designed for participants who wish to begin sailing in a dinghy. All the equipment and gear will be provided.

Koombana Bay Sailing Club also offers informal junior training. Please see our Junior Sailing page.
